Growing up in Germany I met a lot of wonderful Hovawarths. We were lucky to adopt a Hovawarth-German Shepherd-? mix who had all the treats of a true Hovawarth. I hope to have one as a companion one day and am looking forward to see more of them in North America in the future. However, I hope they won't become as popular as the "goldies" so they won't be overbred as those are now.
Good luck to you and enjoy your beautiful dogs !
Greetings from Chicagoland - where I have yet to spot a Hovawarth !

Hi.

I am Canadian, from Wasega Beach Ontario, but I have lived in Japan for 27 years. Twenty-two of these years have been with my husband, Satoshi.

We love dogs. Currently we have five: an Akita, a Boston Terrier, a Kishu Ken, a Shih Tsu and a Shiba. They all get along well. We also have three cats! The dogs and cats get along fine! We are planning to move back to Canada in eight years.

Our dogs are not young and it is unlikely that the large dogs will be able to return to Canada with us. Our small dogs and the cats will be elderly when we relocate.

We have been researching to find a dog that will be a good companion when we move back to Wasaga Beach. Wasaga Beach is on Georgian Bay and also near Collingwood's ski resorts. We think, from descriptions of the Hovawarts temperament, that this type of dog will fit into our managerie, if it is socialized as a puppy with our other pets and with children of family friends and relatives.

It also sounds like an active dog that would enjoy both winter and water actvities with us.

I hope to keep in touch with you and be able to obtain a dog (or pair of dogs) in future from one of your future litters.

Thank you for your informative web site.

Elizabeth Tuz

At the bookstore a couple days ago I ran across a picture of a Hovawort, and thought, "that's my dog!" From what I understand they are not very common in the U.S. so I'm not sure how he came to be around this area but I'm sure glad he did. He's adored so much! Your site was one of the most helpful and interesting I've found. Your dogs are absolutely beautiful!

Love your site and I'm very intrigued by the Hovawart breed. I would like your opinion on my own dog, if you would.
We've had Spike for seven years now (I thought it was six but I looked up the paperwork and it's been seven) when we took him in from a friend who had found him as a stray. We always assumed he was a mixed breed (some thought Rott/Chow) and that was fine. Lately I've been searching on the internet and came across several Hovawart sites. Each one has dogs that look almost exactly like Spike and the characteristics and temperment are an exact fit too. If I coud e-mail you some pictures could I get an opinion from you as to the possiility of Spike being a Hovie? It doesn't seem that a pure bred of such a rare breed would be abused and abandoned in southeastern Michigan (he was found emaciated with one eye damaged so badly that it was lost), but one never does know. If you could offer an opinion I would be very appreciative. Please let me know how to get the pics to you.

Thanks,

I have been working with dogs for years, but this is quiet different from training your run of the mill german shepheard dog (sorry to any shepheard dog lover that stumbles across this, i love them too shepheards are awesome dogs).

Anyways, befor i keep going on, I just wanted to say thanks to michel and his wife, they are running a first class operation and their dogs are just remarkable, looking forward to showing of my dog next year at the HCA show on the east coast

Hello,
I have a dog that is possibly a hovawart.
Everything that i read about hovawarts describe him to a tee. He's a large dog (80lb) has a furry tail, blond, very loyal, very protective, has a blondish nose, white marking on his chest. At first I thought he was a chow-lab cross but when I look on the web his is no different then many other hovawarts.
This dog was a stray dog in California. I pick him up at a concert parking lot. I call him Rider. That was in 1996. We now live in Bowmanville Ontario Canada.
He doesn't like kids. He doesn't attack them but will give a warning snip.
One thing that is very odd...he has a spotted tongue...pink/black. Do you think he is a hovawart? I looked at one web site and they said there is only 100 in north america.

Your Hovies are beautiful. I love the breed and wish to purchase another Hovie someday soon. I have a beautiful, American born, black and tan female. She is 2 years old and a perfect friend. The smartest dog I have ever had the pleasure of giving a well-earned treat to. She knows everything by voice command and hand signal too. Everyone is amazed by her beauty & intelligence. They ask me, "How did you teach her that one?" My response is that she caught on in a few minutes, I hardly did a thing.... She would be excellent in a formal setting. In America, there is little opportunity for her to prove her abilities and earn titles. I hope the AKC will recognize this wonderful secret soon. (Her parents are here in the U S too. They were imported from Finland.)

Kelly Mason ( ckjmason@verizon.net / no homepage) wrote:

Hi,

My name is Kelly Mason. My husband and I had a dog for about 12 years that three or people from Germany SWORE was a Hovawart. We found him at the pound, and we have no way of knowing for sure. But, based on all of the pictures of Hovawarts that we have seen since then, we must admit there is a striking resemblance. Of course, we were also told that it was illegal to export out of Germany. I'm guessing that has changed. Regardless, he was one of those special dogs that comes along once in a great while and touches you in a way that defy words. As you already know, once you have a Hovawart there is no going back. Their absence leaves a hole in your heart that simply most be filled again. Our BJ was a black and gold (or tan, if you prefer) and that is our preference.

Obviously, I am writing because we have always been extremely interested in the idea of owning another one but figured our chances were slim to none given the legality of exporting. (We lost BJ 5 years ago.) But my husband ran across a website with your name and we are wondering if the rules have changed. We still have BJ's sister-she's almost 15 now and a pure mix.

If you’re a breeder worth your salt-and I am going to assume that you are-I'll tell you a little about us. I have been with dogs for all of my 44 years and been training them for about 15. When we get a dog, its for life! I would no sooner give up my dog than I would give up my child! In my estimation, 99.99% of all dogs are good dogs. Unfortunately, many, many dog owners should have a fish tank! My animals are very well cared for. Case in point: the old girl goes to hydrotherapy twice a week for severe dysplasia. (It's basically a tank with a treadmill that you fill to various levels with water thereby removing about 80% of the weight on the joints while increasing the resistance on the muscles. Ever gone running in a pool or the beach?) Her old vet wanted to put her down 2 years ago-she couldn't walk so it was an obvious choice, I suppose. Well, I'm happy to report that she now chases our collie, bullies our cat, follows me up and down the stairs all day long and even runs the fence with the horses! The best part is that she no longer requires any medication-except occasionally on severely cold days. I guess my point is that we are good dog people. Any puppy would have a terrific home here.

We have never "shown" our dogs, although it has been suggested with my current Collie.

I would appreciate any information that you could send me on the subject and any estimated costs involved, assuming Hovawarts are available for export.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you.

Kelly Mason

I like the "non agressive" aspect of the dog. We have always taken our shepherds out, socialized them to almost every possible situation and obedience trained them. Our dogs are part of the St.John Ambulance Therapy Dog program and enjoy it very much. I would be interested in the price of a Hovawart puppy.

I have a male blonde Hovawart. He is 5 years old and is a bit bigger than the normal. He is about 150 lb. He is a GREAT watchdog and has busted through an electric fence to protect me one night when i was home alone. Bradley(my Hovi) is truly a guardian angel and i feel blessed and thank God every day for creating such a remarkable breed to touch the lives of so many people including myself. I would recomend a Hovawart to anyone who would respect the breed and help preserve it and protect it. The word should be spread to everyone that the Hovawart is one of the greatest breeds in the world!

Hi there.. We kept 2 pups out of our litter of black german shepherds. The male is 90% black and rest tan. He unfortunately never raised his ears, so i kept telling my husband that he looks like a Hovawart. No one knows what a Hovawart is down here in Australia, so i opened your home page and had a look. He really does look like one. Tis funny! I love the Hovawart breed, and your dogs look great!
cheers!

Back in June of '88 I got a puppy at the local SPCA. He was best described as a Black Lab/Long Haired Shepherd mix. We thought that his whole life. He died in September of '97. Years later while channel surfing, I found a Hovawart on a Kennel Club Show. IT was Barney, our dog. I've been researching it ever since. He had an excellent attitude, gentle with children and very obedient and loving.
He looked a lot like Fenja. As I just recently found out, Barney was a victim of poor breeding. He died of liver failure.
Your dogs are beautiful. Please let me know when you have another litter of puppies, I would love nothing more then to get one.

Your dogs are beautiful! I may want one of your pups someday. We had a Husky for 14 years so we can handle a strong willed dog! We now have 2 children, ages 1-1/2 and 4-1/2, so we would like a dog that is child-friendly. I love German Shepherds, but I think that a Hovawart would be more appropriate.

I currently do not have any dogs of my own. Living in an apartment has a tendancy to limit what you can do. However, I have been looking at breeds for when I eventually buy property and a home. Having had dogs before, I was looking for a high quality dog that was a good family dog, great with kids, and would become a part of my family. Puting it bluntly, I have fallen in love with the Hovawart. You have beautiful Hovawart dogs. I really admire Lancelot. I will be in contact when I have the property and home for my own. Thanks.

I have a Hovawart also. We got him from a rescue league and they thought he was a sheperd -rotweiller mix. They guessed his age to be about 6 years old. He is the black/gold hovawart. A volunteer thought he might be a "Hovawart" so we typed in the breed and sure enough, he is a hovawart. We are from Fairfax, Virginia. Our dog's name is Gentle Benjamin.
I enjoyed seeing the pictures of your dogs especially the puppy pictures. We wished we had baby pictures of our dog.
Thanks.
