The word "Hovawart" comes from an old German word
"Hofwart" meaning "guardian of one's home". This describes very well his former task. It was the guadian angel of the family against intruders and wild animals which roamed around.
When rebuilding the breed German aimed to develop a working dog which would be a friendly pet and a good companion together with usefull skills and with a well-balanced mind. Even though he is very sensitive, He has a high stimulation threshold, so he can be trained for various tasks like obedience, tracking, search and rescue, agility or protection. His temperament is self-confident, playful, good-natured, and seldom aggressive. Hovawart is patient with children. But it needs to get used to be with them. He doesn't bark too much. But when it does, you should go and see what is going on. |
